Homemaking Tip—Better Bakers

Lately I’ve started cutting our potatoes in half before baking them. I still rub them with shortening like before, but then put the cut side down, sprinkle with coarse salt and bake them at 350 degrees for an hour or so. They get a nicely browned crust on the underside and the insides are so soft. Mm-mm, they are good.

I've never cut them in half to bake them before, that sounds like a good plan. I rub the skin with olive oil and coarse salt before baking them. It makes them taste great and gives me a lovely hand exfoliation and moisturizing.

Now that is a brilliant idea, Jill. Thank you. "Spa treatment with your potato"--a new advertizing bent for the Idaho Potato Commission.

Jane - first of all, your a Washingtonian now - no more "Idaho Spuds" for you :) You must support your LOCAL potato . . .

Secondly, though, great idea! I hate it when then centers aren't done - this solves that problem perfectly!

I love baked potatoes that haven't been wrapped in tin foil, they are so soft and fluffy. I love the idea of cutting them in half legnthwise. Great tip, love the idea of olive oil, too.

Yes we are in Grant County Washington, the largest potato producing county in the nation! But oh those Idaho Potatoes are still amazing!

Wow - good idea. You cut them in half anyway, so it seems like a "duh" moment, like why didn't we think of that sooner. Do they bake faster that way?

That sounds really, really good. Really.

I think that is a great idea for lunch and I'm pretty sure it's going in the lunch rotation!

P.S. Any other suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks for the tip. I will be picking up a 50 lb. bag next week. I don't know if I will be able to get through all of it???

I'm going to have to try these great ideas. I've always just stuck them in the oven - why the salt?

Thank you for your potato tip. I don't usually like baked potatos. I feel like I have to muscle them down. But tonight, I was really craving a baked potato for some reason. So, I tried your tip. Heaven!! I will never eat another foil wrapped tater again! Thank you for changing my mind for me!!

And, PS, thank you for loving and praying for my parents. They are seriously lucky people to have so many friends and stake members that love them and care for them!

I use olive oil and coarse salt, too, but I never thought of cutting them in half before! Brilliant.

great tip and it probably takes less baking time too?

I split them in half, but not quite all the way through. Then open them slightly and insert peppers and onions before I wrap them in foil to bake.
