52 Blessings - Primary Songs

I'm a mean old witch with a hat
And I ride on my broom with my cat.
My chin is pointed and my nose is too.
So you better watch out or I might scare you.
(Big Pause)

We used to sing this song in Primary during the month of October (back then Primary was on Tuesday afternoon instead of during church on Sunday, so it wasn't uncommon to sing about witches and reindeer right along with Jesus).

Primary songs have taken up permanent residency in my brain and I'm grateful for the different phrases that come to mind at various times.

I'm especially glad this song (Give, Said the Little Stream) was learned early and has stayed long.

It seems every Primary child learns I Am a Child of God early, but I have come to appreciate this song even more as a mother and grandmother than I ever did as a child.

Any verses or phrases from songs that you learned as a child that have stuck with you?

A Cholds Prayer runs through my mind all the time. I love primary songs!

I love being in Primary because I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the songs we sing. I get so emotional as the children belt out "We are as the army of Heleman" it gets me every time.

Being married to the primary pianist has its perks— we hear lots of primary songs around here. It's fun to sing ones I loved, and learn ones we didn't sing when I was in primary. Best of all, watching Millie learn them and getting to sing with her. Melt my heart.

I just watched these with Millie. "Is this Conference?!" And then, "Another one!"

"Child of God! Child of God! I know this one!" and a bit later "Turn it up!" and about a minute later, "Don't sing, mom." Guess I'm no MTC.

Thanks for sharing so I could share, too! :)

Primary songs are my favorite! I don't think "I Am a Child of God" was even composed when I was in Primary (old as I am!), but I remember well "I Have Two Little Hands" and "The Light Divine." So many Primary songs express a beautiful, sweet testimony: "I Know My Father Lives" and so many others. Thanks for your blog, Jane. Loye

"Help me dear Father to freely forgive ..." Is a phrase I sing often. My favorite calling of all time is leading the children in singing time. I had the calling when I was first married and it terrified me. I cried every Sunday. Fast forward about 15 years and I was able to serve in that calling again. This time I cried when I was released. I subbed the last 2 Sundays and get to do it a 3rd time this Sunday!

I am the new music person for primary and I loooove it. I was kind of dreading it because, let's be honest, I am the worst singer on the planet. But it's a great calling!

I don't think I truly appreciated I am a Child of God until Claire was born. Now I can't listen to it/sing it without shedding a tear or two. Something about becoming a parent turned me into a big softy.

My favorite song from primary was A Child's Prayer. I love the simple testimony of that song - that Heavenly Father really is there, that he hears my prayers, and that his love surrounds me.

There are a few but 'I Wonder When He Comes Again' is a vivid memory. I can even see the props. I remember sitting in the primary room upstairs in the Rose st chapel (not quite like it was yesterday but I remember sitting there). It's always been one of my favorites.
