Yesterday when I pulled in to get a chocolate ice cream cone I noticed that Dairy Queen has my favorite thing, the Peanut Buster Parfait, on sale for $2.49. I argued, “Just because it’s on sale does not mean you need it. Sale price or no it still has the same amount of calories. Make the smarter choice and stick with the ice cream.” The girl asked for my order and I gave it: “One small chocolate ice cream cone please” and she answered, “That will be $1.94 at the window.” I’m no mathematician, but I know that $1.94 is only 55 cents away from $2.49 and that a cup, spoon, peanuts, hot fudge and a bigger swirl of ice cream are included in that 55 cents, so I said, “Please scratch that for a Peanut Buster Parfait.” I can't out argue a 55 cent peanut protein, dairy product and chocolate anti-oxidant bargain.
My scrapbooking friend, Donna who lives in Bigger Town, spent last night with us so she could attend Cynthia’s funeral today. I never think about how lumpy our beds are or how loud and early the roosters crow until we have company. Donna is a gracious guest and acts like she enjoys them both. Speaking of Cynthia’s funeral, her husband, Matt, spoke at it and did such a good job. All the speakers prior to him had told how much Cynthia loved to have fun. Matt said Cynthia never wanted a somber funeral, no matter what, so he told us all to feel under our pews because someone was going to be the lucky recipient of a prize. Sure enough. There was an envelope under one of the seats that contained a gift of fun on Cynthia—a certificate to her favorite restaurant. I’m adding that idea to my funeral plans.
Sur-prize, sur-prize, sur-prize! I was in the kitchen this evening and guess who came to the back door? One of the greatest missionaries with the best grin, laugh and heart. What a happy and impressive guy. He finished serving his mission here for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints six weeks ago and came back for a quick visit before his college classes begin on Monday. Oh, it is great to see him and was such a wonderful and unexpected surprise. In fact, just a couple of days ago I was thinking of him and thought, “Awww. It’s too bad we’ll probably never get to see him again.” He visited with Calvin and me while I fixed him a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches (he's easy to please) then he went to see other friends while we went to a wedding reception. He’ll be back later to spend the night. I just wish a grin, attitude and laugh like his was available at Dairy Queen.
Have you had a good surprise lately and what, praytell, would you order at DQ if I were buying?

I would order the very same thing! SO dangerous to tell me that it's only $2.49 right now. I'm not sure that was nice. I love the hot fudge, peanutty goodness. I'm glad it won you over with a mere .55!
Matt did a great job today. I loved every bit of his talk. And the gift certificate was very Cynthia to me. From where I was sitting, it looked like it made the whole room smile.
Your ice cream treat looks delicious...my calorie-counting goes out the window when ice cream or hot fudge are offered. What kind of ridiculous (non)self-cotrol is that?!?
I usually just read but this DQ question just made me think I have to answer. I love love love the mint oreo blizzard and that is what I always order, except when they had the special girl scout cookie blizzard last month.
Peanut Buster Parfaits are my dad's favorite. I can't see one without thinking of him. Maybe when we're home next weekend I'll have to take him out and treat him to one. Life gets hot in a welding shop, and ice cream is a great cure!
I LOVE Peanut Buster Parfaits as well!!!! I am a sucker for sales at DQ. I usually get a chocolate dipped strawberry blizzard. Chunks of chocolate and strawberry never do me wrong!
I am bummed I wasn't able to make it to Cynthia's funeral. Even though I don't know her all that well, I like to be supportive, I guess. I had a leadership training class that I couldn't miss.
He is a cute boy. Were Ande and Cali home? :-)
Okay, I'm goin to try and actually answer your questions this time, instead of just adding my own comments.
First, I agree - the service was fantastic, and one Cynthia would have appreciated.
Second, I would've went with the PBP also. If you were buying, same choice, because it's on sale, and I would want to be frugal if I wasn't the one purchasing the goods. But, no sales and my pocketbook? Pecan Mudslide every time. Ice cream, hot fudge, pecans, and hot caramel - it just doesn't get better.
Lastly - you realize you have gorgeous daughters, both inside and out, right? It will never be "your last time" to see a missionary until you have those chickies married off!!!
It has been a long time since my last DQ visit...sadly (but probably the best thing for my waist) the DQ's around us closed. I liked the banana pudding blizzard. I saw a commercial for that Girl Scout Cookie Blizzard recently and I was glad there wasn't one close or I probably would have had a midnight snack :o)
I'm glad you changed your DQ order, you might as well get what you want for that price!
I've never heard of a gift certificate give away at a funeral, what a great idea.
Oh I am so glad that you got what you wanted at DQ! 55 cents, what a bargain!
Oh! Oh! Oh! I have a surprise that happened to me, so I just HAD to comment again. We went to the Tri-cities Dust Devils (minor league baseball) game last night. We ran into my very bestest friend from college that I haven't seen for almost 8 years! It was so awesome. They've been in the tri-cities for the last 5 years following law school in California. Crazy!!! I was/am SOOOOO excited!
I get into the same kind of trouble when the brownie earthquake is on sale. But those nuts on sweet ice cream don't tempt me. It's about the only thing though:)
I am glad your friend's husband found a way to celebrate his wife's sparkle. What a great tribute.
Jane,
I am so glad to hear you went with the PBP. You know I would be right there with you.
Thank you so much for letting me stay with you and your family. Please let Ande know that I appreciate her sacrificing her bed for me.
Cynthia's husband comments were so nice and comforting. I have instructed my family that I want to incorporate the prize - gift certificate in my funeral. But they want to know what restaurant is my favorite. I guess I need to figure that one out.
Thank you for your friendship-I treasure it.
I haven't had any surprises lately which is OK by me (lately the surprises haven't been of the good kind so it's nice to get a break!).
I worked at DQ in high school and really got hooked on their ice cream...the Heath Bar Blizzard is my favorite with a Butterfinger Blizzard running a close second.
I'm still chuckling over Barb's funny comment ;)
I'm still sending out prayers for you and for Cynthia's family...
I haven't had any good surprises lately except for Doug's fabulous homecoming a few weeks ago.
I have to say I would order a cherry dipped cone. My favorite and oddly you can only find the cherry flavor in AZ! Go figure Jenny :)
Please line this missionary up with Rachel!

"I can't out argue a 55 cent peanut protein, dairy product and chocolate anti-oxidant bargain." That is so classic, Jane! I love it.
I always order a peanut buster parfait as well, but now that I know about the chocolate-dipped strawberry Blizzard, I may have to branch out...
