Thursday Thinking--Reruns

Experts suggest that we have 50,000-70,000 thoughts running through our head per day. That’s a lot of thinking. They say that ninety-five percent of those thoughts are the same ones from yesterday. Now that’s some serious rerunning--round and round and round they go. I guess we really are about as happy as we make up our minds to be. Just think how much mileage you can get out of one happy thought . . . and conversely how much play-time a negative one gets.

There was an Ensign article a few months ago about how our brains are like jungles and the well worn paths are where our minds like to go, rather than taking a machete to cut new paths through the jungle. This is a great reminder of the power of repetition in our thoughts and I liked your idea about how much mileage we could get out of a single (repeated) thought.

It's hard to comprehend the concept of having that many thoughts a day, and it makes me a little embarrassed about the repeats going on in my head.

Barb, I learned in a learning conference last fall, that not only are our brains like jungles, but they SNIP the paths that don’t get used after awhile. That’s right, we lose them if we don't use them! Experience determines which ones we keep. Ack. It takes the importance of learning truth to a whole new level.

Jill, I'll join you in being a little embarrassed about letting some thoughts consume my thoughts instead of replacing them with something more productive.

Wow. Wow. This makes me want to work harder at eliminating negative thoughts and creating more positive ones!

Thanks for that good reminder...I needed it today.

I've been sick for the last couple of days, and it always seems like those negative thoughts pop up more frequently when I'm sick.

I think I watch WAY too much tv to have that many thoughts. haha. Hmmm... this post gives me a lot to think about, and rethink about, and rethink about...
