Homemaking Tip—Mush

I know, I know. Mush is mush, but have you tried steel cut oats lately? They have staying power. I recently picked up some steel cut oats in the bulk section at the grocery store. Where have I been?

1/3 cup steel cut oats
1 cup water
A few shakes of salt

Bring water to boil and add oats. Return to boil and simmer for 12-15 minutes or until oats are tender. Add salt. And then you can add whatever you want: butter, sugar, brown sugar, craisins, raisins, strawberries, blueberries, cinnamon, cream, jam, syrup, or . . . nothing. They are even edible unadulterated.

Mush. It’s a funny word, isn't it? It can be something soft and pulpy or the encouragement to go-dog-go. Steel cut oats is both.

Mike and I eat oatmeal almost every morning. We too have just discovered steel cut oats. We both LOVE them!

Mush. I always think cream of wheat, which I LOVE. I can't stand oatmeal. Maybe I should try it this way, it might change my mind. We'll have to see.
I think I associate oatmeal with having to have been force fed them growing up. :)
I love the word mush though, it reminds me of the country. of my heritage. make sense?

My dad calls oatmeal mush, but I'm with Cassidy. Mush is Cream of Wheat to me, which I love! Lumps and all!

Go-dog-go... indeed. I think mush is a fitting name for your oatmeal when we were growing up. It looked and tasted like.... well mush. However, I now love oatmeal. I'm excited to try steel cut oats.

My parents are big steel cut oat fans and have been eating them for years. I love the chew and texture, but usually don't want to dedicate the time for them in the morning when old fashioned oats are just one step below and quicker. I found an overnight recipe lately and figured we could have them for St. Patrick's Day (since they are aka Irish oatmeal). Well, Chris didn't know the plan and had cold cereal before I told him. I'd read that it stores well in the fridge, and it's been quite handy to dish up a bowl, microwave it and have steel cut oats in one minute! (4 parts water, boiling, add one part steel cut oats and boil for one minute. Remove from heat and leave covered in pan overnight. Can reheat on the stove in the morning or store in the fridge. They aren't quite as chewy as the ones cooked in the morning- but just as satisfying!)

Steel cut are my favorite, but no-one else likes them so I have them for lunch when I'm home alone.

I love mush! Last semester I ate it for every meal for almost two weeks straight...I didn't love it so much after that, but you can't beat how cheap and easy it is :)
