Homemaking -- Pieces

The home where happiness securely dwells
Was never wrought by charms or magic spells
A mother made it beautiful, but knew
No magic save what toiling hands can do.
– Arthur Wallace Peach

Cali looked for over a year for a California-King sized quilt.  She couldn’t find what she was looking for,
so . . . she made one.  She wanted advice.  I had none.  My quilt experience consists of an ugly, double-knit polyester, 4-H, lap quilt.  I suggested she find a pattern.  She said she knew what she wanted and would just draw her pattern.  I suggested again that she might want to follow a pattern.  She repeated she could draw her own.  And, she did.  She measured, figured in the seam allowances, drew the pattern, bought the fabric, and then pieced it together.  Just. like. that.  All 110 inches x 110 inches.

Cali brought her pieced quilt top over this week so that she could take it to our friend, Gail, to have it machine quilted.  She had already attached the binding, but after talking to Gail realized she needed to take it back off, so this morning we picked all 440 inches of seams and watched Martha Stewart.  Cali also picked seams from her old baby blanket and refreshed it by adding a new satin binding.  This afternoon we put vegetable beef soup in the crock-pot, made rolls and mini apple pies, and went to see a few friends.  Ande also called a few times – once just to say how good blanched, snow pod peas are if you drizzle them with olive oil and add a bit of mint and sea salt.  It's been a regular ol’ day of homemaking – no magic, just happy.

I'm totally impressed. that is not my forte. Really - homemaking of any kind is a huge stretch for me. But, I love your description of it all.

Oh mom,

You just summed my thoughts up completely. I love making a home and I love it because I've watched you do it for 28 years. I love it when I come over because sometimes we just parallel play and sometimes we just do chores together and sometimes we take naps together and I always go away a better person.

I love you mom. You are one of my greatest blessings. Thank you for this post...

You have an enchanting way of writing Jane. I loved this whole story but the line "Cali also picked seams from her old baby blanket and refreshed it by adding a new satin binding" seemed so real and endearing.

Homemaking is so much better when you get to do it with your mom!
