Homemaking Tip—Anytime, Anywhere Picnic

It was the perfect day for a wiener roast . . . er, yard work. Cali and I were heavy-duty-fuel-gatherers this afternoon with 30+ wheelbarrows full of branches and leaves, so after Calvin came home from work we roasted hot dogs and marshmallows. The only thing missing was Ray, who was traveling on business.

(And I quote, "This is how I keep my face from burning off.")

(And I don't quote, because Calvin is cursing his dog.)

This week’s homemaking tip is a suggestion to keep picnic/wiener roasting stuff handy (hot dogs, buns, chips, marshmallows, chocolate bars, graham crackers) for impromptu opportunities. You can even keep everything in a box or plastic container in the freezer until you need it.

Thanks for humoring me with the weiner-dog roast mom. Right now dad said he's going to get a snack because his weiner-dog was gross and didn't cut it. Again, thanks for humoring me with the weiner-dog roast.

i am a huge fan of burnt charcoaled roasted food, if its slightly charred, im all over it. its always been a thing for me. my uncle says i used to lick ash trays as a toddler... eeeeww, i DO NOT recall that, but I do hope thats not where the love comes from..

I am liking the idea of having stuff all ready to go! I love fires in the back yard and the hot dogs cooked on them :)

Impromptu hotdog roasts are a sure fire way to make the people in my house happy. But I never would have thought to use the spring cleanup as fuel. Brilliant.

I think that is awesome, I love spontaneous! My tip is to keep all the condiments you need for grilled hambergers and hotdogs in a plastic shoe box type container in the fridge, with ketcup, mustard, pickles, mayo, chopped onions, etc. Voila!

I absolutely LOVE weiner roasts after a day of yard work...we use to ALWAYS do that in the summer time, and usually grandma and all the family would gather because we were always all out there helping grandma in the yard!! love it!!! mmmmm memories!

I'll pretend like you didn't say the only thing missing was Ray. Because I'm pretty sure I wasn't there you bum. I have been your best supporter of weiner roasts. Its going to take a lot to make this one up to me Mom.

Such fun photos - I love hotdogs in the spring and summer. I think I'm gonna have to get my freezer stocked up this Saturday and get our firepit ready to go!

Could you post on how to make the fire for the wiener roast...particularly in a grill... with coals that are 10 years old. I've got the supplies all in the freezer, but have never really figured out how to get a spark. And then put a thought bubble in it, because yours always make me laugh!

Seeing the roasted dog and the white coals has me all excited for summer and outside activities. Not sure how much I'll get to enjoy them this year with a curious 18 month old around. Maybe after his bed time!

We used to have weiner roasts all the time at grandpa's house. We would make our own sticks and grandma would have everything glorious for us to eat. Man, those were the days.

Saturday Steven's friends stayed over till it was nearly dark and I sure wish I'd had the makings for an impromptu weiner roast.
