Well Fed -- Country Life

this picture was taken across our driveway of our neighbor's combining corn

I lived in the city when I went to college, but other than that a grocery store has always been at least seven miles away.  I like living in the country.  In the country you don't have to worry about your roosters crowing too loud or your dog barking too much.  In the country you don't have to wear town-clothes all day long.  In the country you drink water from a well and pick your vegetables.  In the country you leave your house unlocked and the keys in your car.  In the country family are your playmates.  In the country you see the stars at night and the sun rise in the morning.  In the country . . .

This post is starting to sound a wee bit too John Denver-ish:

Well I got me a fine wife I got me a fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain't nothin' but a funny funny riddle
Thank God I'm a country boy

(I do wish someone in our family could play the fiddle.  It's one of my favorite instrument sounds.  Until then Calvin will just have to be content with a fine wife and cakes on the griddle.)

Love the picture! This post made me nostalgic for the way I grew up. We weren't farmers but we had neighbors who were and I could drive for miles and the only buildings I saw were houses...mostly I saw corn, cotton, alfalfa or sorghum.

Yesterday we drove by a dairy that's only a few miles from our house and the kids were complaining about the smell. I laughed and said, "What smell? That smells like home! A few of my best friends lived on dairies." Thanks for the reminder of good times!

I love these posts side by side and wish I was there. Badly.

I miss country life. It's so convenient to have a grocery store oh so close, but you have to deal with cars and people to get there. When I was home I took advantage of every chance I got to stare at the stars. And living in the (well, our) city is that chickens aren't allowed. We can't even have the chance to worry if they're too loud. Our one day goal: acreage!

(I love the comment that a dairy smells like home. Even though it does, I still don't like that smell. My mom felt the same way about the stinky sugar factory-- home!)

I have lived in the country most of my life and LOVE it. Even now we have moved away from the D.C. area so we can be in the country. It feels so much like home.

I've never lived in the country. I have a feeling I would like it a whole lot more than Marc would. I certainly like the idea of drinking from a well!

Freakin Eagle Mountain is as close to living in the country as I've ever been and I didn't like it, but I think the reasons for that were not country related, but family related so I'm not going to judge the country by that.

I like the idea of country living, and think if I could have an incredibly well stocked pantry and food storage system and the internet I'd do alright.
